As I sit on the patio on a beautiful sunny day and assess the world, I can’t help but realize how it is in so much turmoil and needs healing. We are experiencing tragedy after tragedy. Parents are stressed to make ends meet. Young people are finding themselves involved in adverse activities on a daily basis. And yet, the world turns as if nothing is occurring. It seems as if there is no hope for mankind. Where is the consideration of others? What happened to the unity in the communities? The Bible states in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Although this is from the Old Testament, it still applies to us today. God’s principle above all is to forgive and when He forgives us for repenting, it establishes an awesome relationship. Now, we are in position for restoration. However, it seems that many are not willing to turn from their immoral ways and therefore, we continue to go down a path that’s less desirable.

I recall the women who had an issue with blood for twelve long years. She had consumed everything she had on doctors. However, none of them could resolve her issue. One day she heard Jesus was passing by and as soon as she came up behind Him and barely touched his garment, her issue stopped! She was healed immediately!

Jesus told her because of her faith, she was now well. This is the type of faith we must exhibit, if we want to witness change for the better. Regardless, how a situation may appear, it may look bad but it’s not hopeless. “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips” (Psalms 89:34).

I know there may be times when individuals may feel that they are all alone. They may feel that no one cares, and at times, they feel like giving up due to the challenges they are faced with and all the chaos that surrounds them. I’m here to tell you today that God is yet in control. You are His child and He cares about you tremendously. “For the LORD thy God is a merciful God; he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.” (Deuteronomy 4:31). God has promised to be faithful to His people. This is His commitment to us. In return, all we have to do, is remain faithful and continue to seek God and His righteousness. God is completely reliable. He won’t fail us like man. We can trust Him. Psalms 37:3-5 says, “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” David calls us to take delight in the Lord and to commit everything we have and do to Him. This means entrusting everything such as our lives, families, jobs, and possessions. God knows what is best for His children.

My brothers and sisters continue to believe and don’t allow the enemy to steal your joy. I don’t care how things may appear right now; remember God is yet in control. He’s faithful to us even when we fall short. In the book of 2 Timothy, it tells us how Christ is faithful even when we are faithless and how He cannot disown Himself. He stands by His Word. “For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee” (Isaiah 54:10).

It may look bad but it’s not hopeless. We must continue to stand firmly and remember we walk by faith, not by sight.

I was thinking about a hunt from last season. I harvested one of my best bucks. It was about 4:00 p.m. when the buck came through behind me. It was well before dark, and I was hunting with a crossbow out of a rifle stand. I did it because the stand was in a fence line that deer liked to travel. I was on the phone when he came through. I hung up, grabbed my crossbow, and placed the perfect shot. It all happened in a few seconds.

To tell the story, I just tell people, it just happened suddenly, Or it just happened. I have chewed on that phrase for some time, and it has always been a part of my theology. Not that “things just happen,” but just the opposite. Things don’t “just happen.” I believe that with all my heart, even though I don’t understand all the issues around it. Another way to express my belief is this. I don’t believe in coincidence or luck. I know. I know.

There are so many things I can’t explain, I don’t understand, and that don’t seem significant. But I truly believe, nothing just happens. I believe there is always purpose behind every event in our life. That means every problem, every person, and every predicament that comes about in our life are only strange and unexpected to us, but not to God.

They may seem insignificant and temporary, or inconvenient and bothersome, but they will not be wasted by God to bring about something in our lives. He is the ultimate restorer, re-gifter, and re-purposer. He not only makes something from nothing, but he also makes something from everything. And every event in our life, both good and bad, is in his toolbelt.

Every person that comes into your life, is someone God will use to bring about something he wants you to know or be. Every pain that sinks you is God’s seed for a new and better growth. Every suffering that tears you in pieces, is God’s opportunity to put you back together, better. Paul reminded us that “God works all things for our good.” And you ask what does “all” mean? All means all and that’s all it means. That means your failure, tragedy, bankruptcy, incarceration, divorce, abuse, addiction, and the constant reoccurring times these happen, are no match for the designing hand of God.

I can look back at things that happened many years ago and still not see their significance. In fact, some of those things seem like an oddity or anomaly to the general direction of my life. And I admit I may die never having my “why” answered. But if God says things don’t just happen, then I have to trust – and you have to trust- that while we may not understand each piece, we can believe God thinks it’s an important part in making us the perfect person he designed us to be.

Remember the excitement you felt on December 31, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. as the New Year was approaching? Then that excitement increased even more once you began counting down from 10 to 1. Who said that feeling has to stop? You have 11 more months ahead of you in 2022. Keep the celebration going by following these tips.

Focus on pleasure – You weren’t expecting that were you? Most people do not pursue financial goals because they assume it will involve pinching pennies, not having fun, or only eating rice and beans for dinner. Wrong! Focusing on how you would feel after achieving a financial goal will make the journey that much sweeter. Imagine the feeling of accomplishment, not to mention security, you would have if the balance in your savings, emergency fund, or retirement accounts increased after making some simple modifications to your daily behavior. Doesn’t that thought feel good?

Make your money behave – Giving your money instructions is the first step to making sure it follows your rules. Those rules exist inside the boundaries of your monthly spending plan. However, rules only work when you execute. Remember, financial boundaries aren’t barriers; they are safety nets.

Count your money – At a minimum, know how much income is coming into your household each month. Pay attention to pre-tax retirement contributions, payroll deductions and taxes. Whatever amount is deposited into your account on payday is what you have to make your financial dreams come true.

Track your spending – You may have heard this once or maybe a thousand times. If you aren’t tracking your spending, how else can you determine if your budgeted spend is in alignment with your actual spend? It’s your money so count it, track it, and then count it again.

Make big goals small – Once you create a financial goal for the year, break it down into a monthly, weekly, or daily goal. If you’d like to save $600 in 12 months, save $50 a month. You could also save approximately $25 every two weeks. Whatever method makes you feel good about taking action, use it.

Set it and forget it – Subscription services are successful because most people forget what they sign up for. This natural behavior works well when used to put or keep money in your pocket. Many 401k plans have an auto-escalation feature that increases contributions each year. Consider creating an auto-transfer from your checking account to a savings account specifically for your next vacation, weekend getaway, or birthday trip.

Reward yourself: It can be challenging to live a life where you never treat yourself to something that brings joy. As you strive toward accomplishing whatever financial goal you set, small rewards along the way, in moderation, can add happiness by the pound.

These seven tips fit perfectly into seven days a week. If you doubt whether they will work, you’ll never know until you execute; don’t just try. The word try implies that failure is an option. 😊 Keep your celebration going and make 2022 the year of the new financial you.

I recently wrote a prayer about peace in my latest book and there was a sentence about eating the bread of anxious toil. When I think about that sentence I realize I’ve probably overloaded on that bread more than I care to admit.

A lot of times when we began to eat healthier we have a tendency to consume less bread because of its carb content. That content can spike blood sugars in us that aren’t beneficial to the body.

Well, imagine how the bread of anxious toil harms us? It takes away our peace, it causes undue stress, and it can even affect our mental and physical status. The more we worry and fret it causes us to become further and further away from trusting God and believing in Him for deliverance.

How do we stop eating the bread of anxious toil?

-Spend time with God.
We can’t trust who we don’t know and that takes time. Building a strong biblical & prayer life will keep us feeding on the most beneficial bread which is Jesus

–Realize our confessions.
We must speak the promises of God versus negative thoughts and words that produce anxiety.

–Being obedient to God’s voice.
God answers us in His timing and way so when He provides an answer that looks different than how we thought…we must obey for the breakthrough.

What we feed on determines whether it’s the bread of anxious toil or bread of life and deliverance.

John 6:33 God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world

John 6:48 I am the bread of life.

The weatherman said our temps were ten degrees below normal for this time of the year. I discovered he was right as I sat shivering in a treestand on opening morning. I brushed off his claim because, well you know, always being accurate in that job is not a prerequisite. I know they try, and I know they can’t completely know, but let’s just say I’m glad the standards for heart surgeons are not this hit-or-miss.

There are just some things where details really matter. I have the opportunity each semester to teach undergrad students. One of their assignments is to do a summary of a particular chapter in an assigned book.

The instructions simply say this. “Your grade will be determined by your ability to follow directions,” I tell them I’m not interested in their opinion or their ability to do more than the desired amount, or anything else. Just simply their ability to follow directions. Why? Because in most things details matter. In some things they are essential and are life-giving or life-taking.

Take for instance my student who wants to become a veterinarian. Since I don’t want her to kill my dog, I prefer her to get the details of a prescription right. Take my other student who wants to become an electrician. Since his wife wants him to come home each night, she would prefer him to get the details right as well. The second mile of sacrifice cannot come before the first mile of obligation. Or as Samuel, the prophet of God told King Saul, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” When I think about the life of faith, sometimes I want to bring to God’s attention each time I sacrificed. (Or at least what I considered a sacrifice) I want to remind him about the extra I put in the offering plate or the meal I passed up in order to pray, or the hamburger I handed out the window to a homeless individual. I remind him of giving up Monday Night Football for a Bible study or getting out of the treestand early on Sunday, so I didn’t miss church.

The truth is, while all these things may be good or honorable, the details are much more mundane – and yet more crucial. They are the obligation of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are what the Holy Spirit, our teacher, is trying to bring about in our lives, and simply what God is looking for from being in his class.

Why are these so crucial? Because they are the tools God uses in our life to point others to him. And they confirm we are a child of God. Our sacrifices are great, but the first thing God is looking for is the basics. It is my ability – my willingness- to simply follow the directions.

Building Intimacy with God

One of the most fulfilling relationships you can develop is a relationship with the Lord. Oftentimes we work hard on building relationships with one another but never take the time to build a strong one with the Lord.

I’m talking about closeness with God where you feel open enough to be totally honest in expressing your thoughts to Him. It’s possible! Intimacy with God doesn’t just arise from nowhere and like any relationship it must be cultivated and developed through time spent together.

Prayer is the most enduring way to gain a close relationship with the Lord because it is the form of communication between you and God. Jesus closed the gap that divided us and now we may commune with God unashamedly.

As you grow in communication with one another the natural outcome is a stronger bond. God yearns for that time and your Spirit has a deep yearning for that time as well. What a place of extreme humbleness to know that God wants to dwell with you in such an intimate way.

The optimal result will be an increased level of adoration and confidence in God who has designed you to glorify Him. This section focuses on prayers that are meant to draw you nearer to God putting away guilt or shame which often keeps us from going deeper in the Lord.

Soon you will be building an open and honest relationship with the Lord allowing you to embrace His love. That love will surround you in amazing ways as you embark on this lifelong journey. There’s no end to where your relationship will go as you trust and depend on Him.

You will soon find yourself sharing your ups and downs and following His lead. That is true intimacy with the Lord. I am thrilled about this journey you are about to embark upon.

Father,

Today I make a decision that will change my relationship with you from this day forward. I’m making a choice to open my heart completely to the view of Your gaze.

I’ve kept my heart on limited access to You, but that ends now as I open every secret compartment. You now have a full entry which will allow us to commune together in one accord. It’s completely necessary that we exam life together unhindered by trust issues on my part.

Permeate my heart until all uncertainty is pushed out. My vulnerabilities are safe with You!

Instead, this book of prayers is meant to unleash such a desire in you that prayer will become like second nature. God’s love for us is so great and He wants us to spend time with Him in prayer as part of a lifestyle with Him.

God speaks to us through His written word, the Bible. Christians speak to God through prayer. Prayer is an important part of a Christian’s life; we pray in words and sometimes we pray in song.

Perfection. It sounds like such a pretty word, doesn’t it? We use it to describe a meal that was cooked just right. A house that is immaculately cleaned, or a turtle sundae with just the right balance of pecans, hot fudge and caramel! Mmmm! Can’t you just feel that wonderful combination melting in your mouth after a long week’s worth of exercise and calorie counting? I know I can.

Turtle sundaes may not be your thing, but they just happen to be mine. Whatever that thing is that floats your boat… get the taste of it in your mind and close your eyes for a minute and imagine it being prepared that one right way. What’s the first thing you’d likely say after you sigh and smile? Probably something like “Mmmm, this is perfect!”

Perfection.

A pretty word that loves to pull us in just to get us into trouble. Its greatest allure is that it looks amazing, but it doesn’t really exist. It is a time thief, a vainglorious game of smoke and mirrors that when you finally pull back the curtain on it, you find out there’s really no such thing as The Wiz. It’s just a vicious cycle that causes you to chase what isn’t there or even more often, makes you do nothing at all since you can never seem to obtain this coveted level of perfection you seek. Can I be blunt here? Perfection is like a well-dressed man that looks spectacular from a distance, but when you get up close you can see that the collar of his shirt is filthy and he wreaks with the stench of last week’s funk. (Sorry gentlemen). Perfection is a mind-binding optical illusion that discourages and stagnates us. Can I free you up? There is none perfect except Christ, so our laser focus should be pleasing Him through a little vehicle known as devotion and discipline, not by trying to be perfect.

Discipline.

Now that isn’t such a pretty word. The mere thought of it usually sends our soulish thinking into a tailspin. Discipline sounds like the hard way up the hill, one more thing to overwhelm our already overflowing plates, and the sweat equity it requires usually isn’t one we look forward to. But can I tell you that embracing discipline can bring about amazing results and peace? The bible puts it this way in Hebrews 12:11…

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

I learned this firsthand when the Holy Spirit recently started wooing me to wake up at 4am each morning. I’d rejected the idea for years, but with my dreams, goals and physical health beating down my door for change, I decided to yield to the Lord’s prompting. You see the thing is, I already had to get up at 5am on weekdays. What was getting up an hour earlier going to render me other than a terrible lack of sleep? I wanted to change the narrative in my life, and perfection had already written me off as a failure because try as I might, I just couldn’t do it. But where perfection had written me a pink slip, discipline said; you’re hired!

With each passing day I found that I was able to get more done in less time. This is probably because my 4am wake-up calls started with prayer, devotions and exercise. Pretty soon I had traded in my rushed and frustrated mornings for days filled to the brim with peace. My house was cleaner, outlook and attitude better and my body slimmer! Everything isn’t perfect even now, but yielding to the Lord in the area of discipline has made everything in my world a whole lot better!

So, I encourage you to give yourself a break and choose discipline. Sounds funny, doesn’t it? Discipline has gotten a bad rap for being a hard taskmaster, but the real slave driver is perfection! Perfection is never satisfied, while discipline only asks you to rest if you must, but don’t quit. Perfection wants everything right now, while discipline encourages you to just focus on one day at a time. With perfection at the helm I’m overly stressed and rarely get much of anything done because I’m too busy critiquing myself instead working toward progress. But with discipline, I feel accomplished by continuing today what I started yesterday. I feel like I have time and grace as I face each day with growth and discipline, instead of the condemning voice of perfection.

Do you have some things in your life that you need to change? I’m pretty sure you do. Do those things require action? Absolutely. But choose to tackle them by cooperating with the Holy Spirit through consistency and discipline, and tell perfection to take a back seat. I promise you in no time you’ll be surprised at how far you’ve come and how much peace you have. It may sound counter intuitive, but Discipline really is greater than perfection.
🍟🍟🍟🍟🍟🍟🍟

Recently, I had gone to lunch, and to my surprise, I was full before I had finished eating. That doesn’t usually happen. If ya know me and my metabolism and how much I like french fries, ya know the fries usually don’t stand a chance against my appetite. 😁 Well, I had about 8 french fries left and I didn’t eat them. Why? Because I had had enough.

Sometimes, we feel obligated to take or eat or accept something just because it was presented or given to us. However, there comes a time when enough is enough. When is enough enough for you? Are your “french fries” disguised as people that drain you? Are your “french fries” disguised as taunting and torment from your past? Are your “french fries” disguised as guilt and unforgiveness? What is stagnating you? What is hindering you? Are your “french fries” negative and hurtful words that were spoken to you and you can’t seem to let go of them? Just because the fries were served to you, doesn’t mean you have to eat them. Just because negativity is presented to you, doesn’t mean it becomes your appetizer. Just because thoughts of unforgiveness may come to your mind doesn’t mean it has to become your main course. Forgive them, forgive yourself, and with God’s strength, you can move on.

It’s time to say enough is enough. Leave the toxic “fries” on the plate and smile knowing that your Heavenly Father will provide your next meal and everything you need. Enough of the negativity. Enough of the doubt. Enough of the worry. Enough of beating yourself up. Read and feast on God’s Word. Not only will you be encouraged, have peace, and get the answers that you need, but you’ll never get full.

What happens when we can’t fulfill people’s expectations of us? Their belief that they will obtain something from us can quickly turn into disappointment that weighs us down, causing us to drown in a sea of frustration and rejection. The pressure can seem insurmountable and can cause us to take on characteristics unbefitting to us in order to meet their wishes. How do we survive and swim ashore? Let me start by sharing a little bit of my story in hopes that it will help you stay afloat, allowing you to swim towards the shore versus drowning.

For the longest, I always felt like I was drowning, drowning in the sea of expectation. I allowed people to put their expectations on me, causing me to sink further and further into the abyss because I couldn’t always fulfill them. I was a people pleaser and I never wanted anyone to think negatively of me. Any type of negativity always pierced my soul and caused severe damage to my spirit, I never felt good enough! Words wounded me, leading towards a feeling of defeat and eventually rejection. I would criticize myself to the point that I tried to change in order to make everyone else happy but making myself miserable in the process.

I finally had to look at how these emotions were causing me to drown and begin the process of swimming above them. I started by holding on to the only lifejacket made just for me and that was my identity in Christ, just as 2 Corinthians 5:17 states,” therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come,” I grasped onto the fact that I am new in Him so who I am and what I can achieve is designed by Him. Also, Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do,” this reminds me that even if I don’t meet someone’s expectations I’m created to do good works, therefore, missing the mark doesn’t define me entirely. God assures me of who I am as a person so that I’m not changing who I am to please someone else.

We can swim above the sea of expectations if we stay true to ourselves and realize God is the only one who has the blueprint and constructs our lives. If we happen to fail to meet the expectations of others, if we focus on keeping criticism about ourselves at bay, it will allow us to continue to move forward and do the good works God created us to do.

One of my biggest fascinations lately is all the superhero shows. I love them. Why is that? Maybe because they have amazing abilities that equate to some sort of perfection where life won’t beat them up. There are no places of weakness in them that speak to flaws or inefficiencies.

I view my life there are times that my weakest moments highlight an inability to handle circumstances that try to overtake me, far from superhero abilities. It’s in these instances where the thought of being a superhero would be great. These type of shows gives examples of strength and might right in the nick of time. Here’s the reality that I must grasp…there is a superhero working in my life, Jesus Christ and I need only to tap into Him. He’s not made up or some type of fantasy, He is the living son of God.

The Word of God Word highlights that Christ Jesus shows up… in my weakest areas, He gives way to His amazing strength that carries me through. I don’t need to fantasize about being a superhero because my weaknesses give way for God to show up strong.

He is perfect and covers me in His flawless protection. Take a look below for some passages of scripture that signifies who is the superhero in my life.

2 Corinthians 12:10
For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

1 Corinthians 1:27
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength

Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

Isaiah 41:13
For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

Isaiah 40:28-31
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
