This is the sixth in our series on The Christmas Story.

As we continue to look at all the events surrounding The First Coming of Christ, we should stand amazed at the amount of JOY that was being unleashed and spread around all over the place throughout the Christmas story. We do not give Joy enough attention. The Joy we are talking about is the Joy that comes from the Lord. It is a penetrating, abiding and freeing sense of gladness and exhilaration on the inside, over something anticipated or a present good. Remember, Mankind had been lost in sin and cemented in darkness for 4,000 years. The earth was all messed up, creation was awaiting something or someone to fix the utter state that everything was in. That there could be a release from this imprisonment could only be ushered in by a complete and overwhelming joy. The fullness of the time had come and this season saw the busy-ness of Heaven, preparing for the coming of Christ. As we have said so many times in this series, there were so many great and momentous things happening. The release of Joy to all was in full flow.

So many people were Blessed with the abundance of JOY around the Birth of Christ. When the angel appeared to Zacharias, he was told in spectacular terms, that “THOU shalt have joy and gladness; and MANY shall rejoice at his birth” (Luke 1:14). Shortly thereafter, Elisabeth visited Mary, the mother of Jesus, and John the Baptist was so supernaturally overtaken in the womb, “Lo, as soon as the voice of thy (Mary’s) salutation sounded in mine (Elisabeth’s) ears, the babe (John) LEAPED in my womb for joy” (Luke 1:44). After this, we see at the time of Elisabeth’s delivery, “And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her” (Luke 1:58). We subsequently have that moment with the Wisemen from the Far East, “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with EXCEEDING GREAT JOY” (Matt. 2:10).

Finally, we have the breathtaking moment of the shepherds in the field — “And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:9-14). What we are talking about here is Good News, a Great Joy, for All of Mankind. And not just one angel sent from God to make that Ultimate Announcement, but a multitude of angels making an earthly appearance, giving Glory to God, the Most High, who long ago decided that He would come to get Man back. What LOVE God was manifesting. God never gives up on us. And what did Man get out of this? PEACE (shalom), which means “nothing missing, nothing broken”. And SALVATION (Matt. 1:21), which includes deliverance, restoration and wholeness.

We did not deserve any of this. Instead, the God of all Peace stood steadfast in Who He is and said I Love Them. And created a whole Plan to get Man back, and fulfilled that Plan thoroughly.

This is a time to get lost and absorbed in JOY. Put JOY on today.

Rejoice. Again I say, Rejoice. Let us not neglect so great a Salvation.

Think deep today of your own Salvation and how deep it is. Come out of that pondering then with the greatest exuberance and joy.

The Good News 2.

This is our 5th in our series of The Christmas Story – The First Coming of Christ.

We have been emphasizing the myriad of things happening around the Good News, that Emmanuel – God With Us was about to be manifested and this Jesus was going to be a World Changer and Lover of Souls that no one had ever seen or would ever see. No one did what Jesus, the Man, did. Not even close. Part of Creation’s groaning, to be fixed and restored to a place of Peace, was unfolding in real time.

There are two different and important items I wish to cover in today’s message. All from Luke 1 and 2 and Matthew 2. The first has to do with dealing straight with a narrative that has been repeated so long in Christmas tradition, it has caused a lot of harm to a right understanding of our God.

We have heard over and over that “there was no room in the Inn”, because Joseph and Mary were very poor. This is the erroneous story we have been sold, along with that poverty is somehow a holy attribute of being a Christian. Add to this the emphasis that Jesus was so humble, He HAD TO BE born in the back of the building, in a mere donkey’s stable. Folks, we need to get over this created narrative and understand some basic facts.

The Roman Empire, the government, was in taxation mode (as is often the case). Emperor Caesar sent out an edict, that everyone on their areas had to show up in person, to pay a tax. Joseph and pregnant Mary were required to show up in Bethlehem, the City of David. It is no small thing, that the lineage here is directly from David, the man after God’s own heart, a King and a famous one at that. This was also prophecy being fulfilled these many centuries later.

So you have a whole mass of people showing up at one place at one time and for that reason alone, there was no room at the Inn in town. There were not multiple hotel options in town like we might have. Plus, there is zero evidence that Joseph had no money (to stay at the Inn), he was there with money to pay taxes. No evidence whatsoever he was poor or broke at all.

Brothers and Sisters, it was impossible for Jesus to be born inside the hotel, the Inn, given what was about to unfold. For when this Jesus was born, there was an absolutely large entourage of excited visitors that hit the place, both a bunch of shepherds and also a group of prominent men from the Far East, more than three. No way all these visitors could have been accommodated inside the Inn building of those times. There was no extra space. The outdoors accommodated the entourage just fine. That Jesus was born in a stable does fairly register, that God being God, didn’t have to be an elite and find a five-star location for birth. Folks, there were no 5-star locations there. Jesus was just fine being born outdoors in the back, given all the facts of what going on.

One more thing about this false poverty narrative. Scholars purport that the gifts brought by the wise men from the Far East (Asia as we know it today) was worth, in today’s terms, somewhere between $500,000 and $5 million. We don’t know what Joseph did with those riches or whether they were put in some kind of trust fund. Regardless, Jesus was born into this earth just like a King and all the earthly kind of glory that went with it. I am not making a case for worldly riches being what God was about. Not at all. But I am making a case to stop this narrative was Jesus was poor and wore the false badge of poverty all 33 years of His time on earth. There is more fact that this was not the case, for another discussion. Don’t make more of riches than anyone should and don’t make something about poverty that never existed here. The integrity of God doesn’t need us to make up things about Him.

The second focus today has to do with FAITH. The importance of Faith. We see that IMPORTANCE of Faith with Zacharias and with Mary.

Zacharias was a Jewish Priest. He walked closely with God (Luke 1:6). And we know from Luke 1:13, that he and Elisabeth not being able to have a baby was a huge burden for them, they prayed for this from their hearts a long time. The heart mistake Zacharias made was that he prayed but he did not believe (Mark 11:24). After a very significant announcement from Gabriel, so chock full of the Word of God to him that ought to have lit him up and grabbed hold of him given all that was in the announcement (Luke 1:11-17), Zacharias responded with notable unbelief, you can hear it and so much so, that the angel reproved him, “And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the very presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season (v. 19 & 20). Unbelief did not cancel the coming of the baby John (the Baptist). But so that Zacharias would not hinder the things of God and continue to speak unbelief around all that was to transpire, extremely significant things in the earth for all mankind, he was made to not be able to speak anything for a season. The power of unbelief, coming out in words, should never be underestimated. Things happening or not happening are in the power of the tongue (Prov. 18:21).

In complete contrast to Zacharias is Mary, she responded to the chock-full Word of the Lord delivered by the angel with FAITH, “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word (Luke 1:38). Add to that that Elisabeth said of Mary, “And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord” (v. 45).

This is such a huge and valuable lesson of Faith in operation and effect of unbelief in operation. The lesson is for all of us. We live by Faith and we walk by Faith. Faith is a Must-Have for every child of God. God desires Believing Believers.

We will continue this series.

The Role of Angels at the Coming of Christ.

This is the 4th in our series – The Christmas Story: The First Coming of Christ.

Far beyond what natural history is all about when it comes to Mankind, it is quite an eye-opener when we realize that what stands above all – is the reality of the story of God and Man and how that affects just everything that is really ultra important in this life. And in the story of God and Man, these stand out as defining the course of all things: the creation of Adamic Man, the subsequent fall of Man, the coming of Jesus the Christ and His earthly ministry, then Pentecost, then the end of this age with a new heaven and a new earth. Clearly, the coming of Jesus affected Mankind more than anything or anyone else ever. You know what would have happened to us if Jesus never came. Take a moment with all of this and consider how it is that God was always thinking ABOUT US and always doing things FOR US.

The Birth of Jesus was finally here and ALL OF HEAVEN was so involved. This was HUGE in the whole unfolding of Mankind. We saw last week how totally the Holy Spirit was involved. Besides that, the angels of the Lord were very busy with events. We will also see that a group of shepherds and a group of wisemen from the Far East also played an interesting and prominent role in the Main Event.

Today we will talk about the angels around Christmas.

Let’s start by getting something straight. The angels at Christmas were not chunky little white babies, floating around in cloth diapers, as some Nativity artwork in history portrays. On the contrary, angels are strong, imposing, heavenly beings of stature. Seems almost every time they appear on earth, people get full of fear until told to calm down. My brothers and sisters, angels are ministering spirits sent by God to SERVE those who inherit salvation (Heb.1:14). That would be us on the receiving end of angels. Angels are those beings from God, the heavenly host, the armies of heaven, over which there is a Lord of Hosts, and we know Who that is. Micaiah saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left (I Kings 22:19). The Psalmist informs us that His angels are mighty in strength who carry out His word, who hearken to the voice of His commands (Psalm 103:20). It is important that we have a right view of angels and show deference for the work they do and Who sends them. Most importantly to consider today, angels were very busy in the super event of Christ coming into the earth, to redeem Man back and put Mankind back where God always wanted us to be. This is Love in action, of the unfailing and unconditional kind.

There are five appearances of angels in the Christmas Story that we find in Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1-2. Gabriel, the Archangel, is mentioned twice by name. He is known as the Announcement Archangel, the Messenger Archangel.

The first instance is with Zacharias, father of John the Baptist. Here we see Gabriel appear and say of himself “I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings” (Luke 1:19). Read for yourself (Luke 1) the entire glorious announcement Gabriel made to Zacharias and how great this baby (John the Baptist) was to be. Just staggering.

We soon next see Gabriel “sent from God” unto Mary and announcing to her that she has been chosen by God to bear a son, Jesus the Christ. We can hardly fathom the magnitude of that announcement to the virgin Mary. You must read for yourself all that Gabriel told Mary (Luke 1) and how astounding it all was. Rejoice!

And then there’s the amazing event, when some shepherds tending flock in the field were visited by the “the angel of the Lord” and that angel shone brightly with “the glory of the Lord” and announced that JESUS WAS HERE. What happened next with these glad tidings in the whole earth? A “multitude of angels” were beyond excited and they praised God and declared to all there “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2). What a something that had to be for these common shepherds, who God set apart to be part of this most magnificent time for Mankind.

The remaining two appearances of an angel both involved Joseph, Jesus’ father, when Joseph was told to make haste and hide in Egypt, at a time that evil Herod (first outright attempt by satan to take Jesus out, using government to do it) horrifically ordered the killing of all infants in the region. The angel later told Joseph when the coast was clear to go back home. The point here to see is that angels are ministering spirits sent from God, in this case to protect us. Angels are tremendous servants that cover a lot of ground for our sakes and they should be appreciated for the scope of what they do for us.

Brothers and Sisters, so much was happening around the coming of Jesus for us. I mean So Much. Please take some real time today to ponder and appreciate every detail of how God does things and just how much He loves us.

(Series to be continued)

The Story of God and Man at Christmas 2.

This is the third in this series, The Christmas Story – The First Coming of Christ.

The Creation of Man, the being made in God’s exact image and likeness, was thoroughly momentous. The subsequent Fall of Man was cataclysmic and consequential. And now, the Coming of Christ, pivotal and far-reaching. It was from before the foundation of the world and it came just at the right time, in the fullness of the times. The whole earth was in pain, because sin and death had taken over. The Seed of a Woman promised in Genesis 3:15 was about ready to manifest, to destroy the works of darkness and restore Mankind back to where it was before the Fall. That place that Man had was a place of glory, a place of dominion, a place of being just like God in the earth. ALL FOR HIS GLORY! HALLELUJAH!

If you think the Birth of Christ was not weighty, think again. There was so much going on, by so many. We will be looking at all the events and those involved, so as to magnify and fully appreciate what the Birth of Christ really means and how significant it was. Today we are going to look at the presence and the engagement of the Holy Spirit throughout the First Coming of Christ.

All of Heaven was involved with the Coming of Christ. As to the Holy Spirit, we first must exclaim that He carried out the great assignment of bringing into existence a seed being supernaturally placed into Mary. Obviously, this wasn’t hard for God to do, He created how babies come in the first place. We also know The Christ had to come through a woman but He could not come through a man on earth, because of the sin problem the man carries in his seed. Thus, we see in Luke 1:35, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Again in Matt. 1:18. “When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” We must acknowledge again, that it was the Seed of a “Woman” and not the simultaneous seed of a man, that was to come to restore everything back after Adam fell (Gen. 3:15).

Given that the Holy Spirit operates the things of God in the earth and nature and people respond when God is present and at work (at creation, or when rocks would otherwise cry out, or when the sun turned dark at the crucifixion, or when a sound filled the whole place in Acts 2), it stands to revelation, that the star that appeared and lit the way for the wise men of the east, to find the Baby, was overseen and directed by the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit was directing things and the things were glorious.

But this is not all. Here are yet four more times the Holy Spirit was actively engaged in the coming of Christ.

First, we see at the announcement to Zacharias of the birth of John the Baptist, that John “shall be FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST, EVEN FROM his mother’s womb” (Luke 1:15). Next we see that Elisabeth, mother of John the Baptist, was FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST, “And it came to pass that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost” (Luke 1:41). And if that wasn’t enough, we see that when John the Baptist arrived at birth, Zacharias, his father, was FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST and he prophesied and pronounced something huge for all to hear: “And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied” (Luke 1:67). Finally, we see in Luke 2:25-27, how a very special man, Simeon, was led by the Spirit of God at the consecration of Jesus, “And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law …”.

The Spirit of The Living God was ALL OVER the events of the Birth of Christ, filling and orchestrating so many things. Jesus and His forerunner, the great John the Baptist, were both coming, to set something into motion the world was long waiting for, the salvation and redemption of all mankind. This was all huge. And the Holy Spirit was fully present and so fully active.

Glory to God! This is so exciting!

Next in the series, we are going to talk about the role of angels at the coming of Christ. What a role they had to play. Big time.

The Story of God and Man at Christmas 1.

More than just appreciation for the coming of Christ as we’ve commonly heard about it all our lives, and more than the emoting we do around the season of Christmas, we are looking much closer and looking much deeper at the full significance of what we know as Christmas and the First Coming. Insofar as the immensity of the creation of Man (Man in God’s very own image) and the Fall of Man marks the initial story of God and Man, so too is the coming of the Lord, to do the many things He was called to do FOR US. It is a whole lot more than simply saving us from our sins, as critical as that is. We overlook, we have not been rightly taught, we do not comprehend the revelation of the multiple assignments that Jesus was to have in the earth.

This is our second in the series on the birth and coming of The Lord. Today we will be looking at one specific part of The Why of Jesus’ coming, one most of us have not captured. In capturing it, our lives are changed in ways that blow the mind and catapult our spirit man.

It was because Man fell from his position and authority in the earth and broke his relationship with God, that Jesus had to come. Everything changed with severity when Adam sinned. Immediately, God had to announce what He was going to do about it (it was planned from before the foundation of the world, the plan of Man was not dethroned) and He did that in Genesis 3:15. Most importantly we see that the Seed coming was coming to bruise the devil’s head, which in the Hebrew more significantly means, that Jesus was coming to bruise the devils’ “headship”, the devil’s rule on the earth. The devil had stolen the full authority God gave Adam to govern the earth (Gen. 1:28) and he perverted it in evil. Jesus was coming to take that authority back. He had to do it as a Man, because God gave the earth to Man. If God took the earth back as God and not as a Man, He would have violated and undone His own Word when He completely gave the earth to Man (Psalm 115:16), to rule and fix it. God could renege on who He intended the earth to be ruled by. It was Man. This is so climacteric that we see this.

In a “Christmas” verse we are all familiar with, there are two parts of Isaiah 9:6-7 that we need to spotlight today: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder” -AND- “Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom”. What government is being talked about here? The same government that God gave Adam back in Genesis, to rule all things in the earth and fix everything and bless the whole earth. Except this time, this rule on the earth was explicitly being framed in what we learn is the Kingdom of God. What is the Kingdom of God? It is not a political identification we are talking about. It is something so much bigger. The Kingdom of God can well be defined as “God’s rule and way of doing things”. His way of doing things is completely different than ours. For one thing, all His ways come out of Love. Moreover, the earth was even a worse mess when Adam fell and the devil assumed authority in the earth. Death reigned. Sickness became rampant. Poverty and loss became pervasive. Jesus was coming, not just to save us from sin and give us Heaven upon our passing. He was coming to redeem us and restore us the original glory and responsibility that Adam first had. Jesus is the Last Adam (I Cor. 15:45). Jesus was coming to start fixing things and to establish a Kingdom. The Kingdom of God.

The criticality of us seeing Jesus’ birth in terms of the government or rule being upon His shoulder has everything to do with what was going to happen as this earth remained after Jesus went back to heaven. The earth was going to continue for some time and there was going to be someone else in charge. This rule or jurisdiction was now going to be “Jesus in Lord”, all authority in the earth would be His, He was going to give that authority to us and we were to continue what Jesus did on the earth as His Body. The Head was going back to heaven, to sit down at the right hand of the Father. The Body of Christ was remaining on earth and simultaneously had its citizenship in Heaven and was itself seated there with delegated authority to rule, seated at the right hand of Jesus, a place and position of power and authority. (Eph 2:6)

What is all this significance? Aren’t we supposed to be talking about Christmas as a baby in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes? We are. But we must tell the whole story of the WHY this baby came. He came to establish the Kingdom of God. A new rule. And where did He put that rule? He put it in us, the very Kingdom of God is within us (Luke 17:21). The Kingdom came and was established. And The Church, the Body of Christ, the governing arm of the Kingdom (this is Us), was to continue the rule after Jesus went to heaven. This rule was significantly not the rule of law as we often hear in worldly politics, but the rule of Love.

When Jesus came and grew up, He started immediately preaching the Kingdom of God and the Good News (the Gospel) that came with it. Everything was changing. This was a Kingdom ruled by Love (Matt. 22). This was a Kingdom that operated by Faith. Faith is the currency of the Kingdom. This is a Kingdom where spiritual death no longer would reign, we could now have eternal life. This is a Kingdom where there is no sickness, sickness no longer reigns. Jesus healed disease everywhere, “healing ALL those oppressed of the devil” (Acts 10:38). He also delivered people from foul spirits and bondage (Mark 3:11). He took people out of the curse of poverty (Lk. 4:18b; II Cor. 8:9). It is ASTOUNDING ALL HE DID FOR US when He was here. HE WAS ALSO SHOWING US HOW TO DO IT, to continue after He left. This is the Kingdom of God in action. This is the government that is upon His shoulder and one eminent reason He came. We now have the job to do, to continue, to do the “greater works” He spoke of in John 14:12.

The Christmas Story and The Why of His First Coming is so momentous and so consequential. It is so much more than we have ever realized. It is incumbent on us to embrace ALL OF THIS and be utterly changed by it. We need to see and we need to take our place and change the earth.

We will continue this series.

The Good News!

There is nothing but a MASSIVE amount of Good News with the first coming of Christ, which we celebrate at Christmas. Let’s talk more about this!

This is a several-part series, to magnify many of the events and the many astounding pieces of what went on around Jesus’ birth. Most of us have not spent time treating this story as the Word of God, meditating on it like we would other verses in the Bible. Most of our sense of what went on comes to us from Sunday School, from warm emotions around the Christmas season, from snippets on greeting cards, from the notions of sitting around the fire singing Christmas Carols and watching movies. Jesus’ birth did take place with some element of a Silent Night. But things that night and prior were anything but “Silent”, quiet and all-is-calm. There was a whole lot of holy and supernatural excitement, to say the least. God was sending forth His own Son.

There were so many glorious pieces happening. Too many to recount here. It included momentous involvement of the Holy Spirit on the earth. Momentous involvement of angels on the earth. Momentous involvement of a whole cast of people over a short period of time, including wise men/leaders from afar and shepherds in the field. Many specific prophecies recorded long before were coming to pass.

Ponder this deeply. This was God’s Plan from before the foundation of the world. And now, 4000 years after Adam, “the fullness of the time” (Gal. 4:4) had come. This goes all the way back to the fall of Adam when God made clear to the Adversary, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Gen. 3:15)”. Don’t lightly pass over these common verses. A fulfillment of Genesis 3:15, where God told satan he would be totally defeated by a Seed to come. Imagine if there was no Genesis 3:15.

THE SEED HIMSELF WAS COMING TO EARTH. To do what? To save the world from their sins and restore Man back to the place, privilege, and position – the RIGHTFUL PLACE that Love Himself created – from before the Fall.

This is all so MAJOR, MAJOR, MAJOR.

Christmas is truly a proclamation of deliverance and restoration for every single one of us. Any way you cut it, we all have to be first saved from our sins at a point in time. We all have stuff. It needs to go. This is your time if you never asked Him into your life. No works on your part are necessary at all. He did all the work. This is a free gift. You simply have to genuinely ask and receive.

We will continue the story of God and Man at Christmas in the next blog.

Do take the time to study and do a deep dive into the Word of God being revealed.
