Righteousness is an attribute of moral purity to God alone [cf. John 17:25]. We are made righteous because of what Jesus did on the cross.
We ourselves are not righteous, but God has made us in Christ. When God looks at us, He does not see us as we are; He sees only Christ. Because we are in Christ, Thus we have a perfect righteousness before God. Christ is our righteousness. “For He [God] has made Him [Christ] to be sin [a sin offering] for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” [cf. 2 Corinthians 5:21]
Therefore we have the righteousness of God in Christ. This righteousness is perfect because Christ is perfect. This righteousness never changes because Christ never changes. This righteousness is now our righteousness because we are in Christ. This perfect righteousness is not obtained by our works. We cannot produce it ourselves, but only through the cleansing of sin by Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
The amazing truth is that; Jesus exchanged our sin for His perfect righteousness so that we can one day stand in the sight of God; that is being accepted as righteous and treated as righteous by God on the account of what Jesus Christ has done.
We have received this precious gift of righteousness from God of all mercy and grace. This righteousness God gives us can not be improved upon, we have the perfect righteousness of God through Christ Jesus.
